As a rough guide, 1/4 suits about ages 4-6, 1/2 about ages 6-8, 3/4 about ages 8-11 and 4/4 ages 12 to adult, but height and arm length matter more than age. Nylon strings (some sets use carbon trebles with wound bass strings). Never fit steel strings to a classical or flamenco guitar: the extra tension can damage the neck and bridge.

Both use nylon strings. Flamenco guitars usually have a lower action, a brighter and more percussive sound and a tap plate (golpeador) to protect the top; classical guitars are voiced for a warmer, rounder tone with more sustain.
