The Gibson Les Paul™ Special was first introduced in 1955 as an upgraded version of the Les Paul Junior — a stripped-down yet high-quality solidbody electric guitar originally created as a student model in 1954. Like the early Juniors, the original Les Paul Special featured a slab, single-cutaway mahogany body. But Gibson refined the concept by adding a second pickup, additional controls, a pickup selector switch, fretboard binding, and an elegant mother-of-pearl headstock logo. While more feature-rich, it maintained the Junior’s simple wraparound bridge, raw attitude, and broad tonal flexibility — making it an instant hit with both students and professional players. 

In 1958, the model evolved into a double-cutaway body for improved upper-fret access, and by 1960, Gibson enhanced stability even further by slightly repositioning the neck pickup and introducing the now-iconic SlimTaper™ neck profile for faster, smoother playability.
