The Gibson Les Paul™ Special was first introduced in 1955 as an upgraded version of the Les Paul Junior — a stripped-down yet high-quality solidbody electric guitar originally intended as a student model. Like the early Juniors, the first Les Paul Special featured a slab, single-cutaway mahogany body, but it expanded the concept with a second pickup, additional controls, a pickup selector switch, fretboard binding, and a mother-of-pearl headstock logo. While more feature-rich, it preserved the Junior’s simple wraparound bridge, direct attitude, and wide tonal range — a combination quickly embraced not only by beginners but also by countless professional musicians.

In 1958, the model transitioned to a double-cutaway body for improved upper-fret access, and by 1960, Gibson refined the design further with a repositioned neck pickup for better stability and a new SlimTaper™ neck profile that made it faster and more comfortable than ever. It features a double-cutaway mahogany body that provides exceptional balance on a strap and effortless access across all 22 frets. The mahogany neck sports a comfortable SlimTaper profile topped with a bound rosewood fretboard adorned with acrylic dot inlays and medium jumbo frets. On the headstock, smooth-turning Gibson Vintage Deluxe tuners with white buttons work alongside a Graph Tech® nut to ensure solid tuning stability. The strings anchor to a classic wraparound bridge/tailpiece fitted with two intonation screws and mounted directly to the mahogany body, delivering the resonance, sustain, and tonal punch the Les Paul Special Double Cut is famous for. A pair of Gibson’s iconic P-90 Soapbar pickups — hand-wired with individual volume and tone controls — powers the instrument.
