The SJ-200’s massive sound chamber was important to “singing cowboys” of the early 20th century who gigged in progressively larger venues long before acoustic amplification was an option. Since the SJ-200’s launch in 1937, the SJ-200 gained a reputation as the “king of flattops.” The resulting tone is a force to be reckoned with — lush, crisp, and deep, with an ideal sound for loud ensemble bands and singer/songwriters. The original Johnny Cash SJ-200 was crafted at the height of this model’s popularity, and it cleaves to Gibson’s winning formula with maple back and sides topped with solid spruce. Gibson’s luthiers refused to settle for anything less than 100% % accuracy when they decided to hear fans out by re-creating legendary Johnny Cash’s SJ-200. They were sure to capture the original’s distinct pickguard with a shape that helped set the tone during Cash’s early bad-boy era playing to the masses. The fingerboard inlays reproduce the original’s hand-lettered style, and the four-bar mustache bridge frames the lower bout with country-western style like spurs on a boot.
